Visit from Asia, Journey Moms

We had a visit from a wonderful friend of one of our Journey Moms. Brenda lives in East Asia with her husband and family. She spends her time mostly homeschooling her children and visiting orphanages alongside her husband when she has opportunity. They have 4 biological children and 3 adopted children from Asia. She shared how at one point in her life, she said she would never adopt.

Well, God has taken her down another road.  She began by having an opportunity to foster a child who has created a special bond between herself and one of our Journey Moms, Terri. This is extra special. This child, Sam, was fostered by Brenda for a year and one-half before adopted by Terri.  They shared about this bond during our time together last Monday evening, 7/8/2013.  Brenda stated how difficult the waiting was when she did not know who was going to adopt him and she kept getting different referrals and each one would fall through, etc.  She kept praying for a Christian family for Sam and was so blessed and amazed by God when she met Terri and Phil.  Now anyone that knows Terri and her family knows how much they love the Lord and seek to do His will, love Him, honor Him, etc.  It was a true blessing Terri and Phil were matched with Sam!
Brenda was given pictures beforehand of Terri’s family to prepare Sam.  Terri said it was so neat to see the look on Sam’s face when Terri and Phil were actually there in person!  She said his eyes got so big with wonder and amazement as he sat on Brenda’s hip at their first meeting. They stayed in country a couple weeks each time to visit and complete paperwork. Then during the second trip it was transition time.  Terri and Brenda said they discussed who would ‘be mom’ for each event and meeting they had together. Brenda started out as mom of course since Sam was used to her and then slowly Terri took more responsibility of Sam over the next few days and weeks.  Terri said when it was time to leave, Sam did not cry out or have much grief at all until about 5 days later.  During that time he seemed to be thinking about his foster siblings because he was around other children in a play area and began to look a little frightful and then began some deep sobs. Terri cried as she shared and we all got a little teary eyed.

God never planned on loss.  He never wanted loss.  In adoption there is much loss.  Loss grieved is healing to the human soul. It washes out that pain and allows memories to be cherished or remembered without so much pain later.  A child that grieves for those whom he or she lost is a healthy child.  A child also will experience loss at all ages while growing up as their understanding grows about their past.  This is time to embrace your child.  Embrace and support your child and be careful of how you feel.  Try not to allow your feelings influence the way your respond to your child.  If you have an unrealistic expectation that your adopted child will never have questions about his/her past or if you feel rejected if he/she asks then work that out on your own.  Take time to grieve your unrealistic expectation.  Try not to let your feelings influence the way you support your child.  Its healthy and normal for your child to ask and wonder.  Allow them to do that. It does not make you any less of his or her parent.  You are given the gift of raising this child, but the child is still not ours. The child is the Lord’s.  Thank God for the time to parent and love.  Ask God to show you how to parent just as He parents us.  One cute example I heard once was about a little girl after taking a bath and being wrapped in a towel, began asking her adopted mom about her biological mom. She said she just wonders what she looks like. The adopted mom took her little girl and stood her in front of the mirror. She said, ‘look at you, I would bet your mother would have looked a lot like you look.’

Brenda shared about some of the orphanages and how some are pretty good and some are not so good. She adopted one little child out of an orphanage in which the workers were often found playing cards instead of caring for the infants.  She babies are mostly laying on a wood board inside their crib with a thin blanket or sheet under them.  They have one little diaper wrapped about them tied on with a string.  Brenda said the workers do less and less because if they do more, the children will need more.  Such as you feed you have to change, if you talk more, they want to interact more, etc.  She said the children often bully each other as well. Since there is limited supervision, they often find ways of getting along. One example she gave was a time when she was going to adopt a little girl and she saw a frightened little girl in front of her. She had not visited with her much so this little girl did not know her as a trusted mother yet.  Then this little girls eyes got real big as she looked across the room and Brenda looked over to see a little bully boy coming over to her, Brenda jumped in the way and shielded this little girl from the boy.  From that moment on this little girl was up in Brenda’s arms and felt safe.  She began to trust her as her adopted mom.

One of our Journey Moms got a chance to talk with Brenda about her adoptions of two little girls adopted at different times from Asia. This was a helpful time she said because she helped her understand her daughter’s better.  One was from an orphanage and one from a foster home.

We were blessed to have Brenda with us and look forward to more refreshing and encouraging times together as Journey Moms. All moms, want-to-be moms, grandmothers, just those interested in being supportive of moms that have adopted or will adopt, etc. are all welcome to our Journey Moms events. If you have a topic you would like to hear more about or have some stories you want to share, etc. please contact me at alyssachirch@comcast.net.  I would be happy to set something up!

We meet in Valpo at the Uptown Cafe the second Wednesday of every month. This is often subject to change, so stay up to date on our Journey Moms facebook page. Thanks!!

Market SALE and update!!

We have been enjoying our summer while awaiting a travel date for our adoption.  We praise the Lord that we can be advocating for orphan care to our community through the Kaylee's Hope Booth at the Central Plaza Market in downtown Valparaiso.  Derek and I both agree, its not our favorite thing to get up early in the summer and set up our booth downtown and be there all day, but it has been worth it even for the conversations alone.  So far there have been people just hearing about orphan care needed around the world that maybe wouldn't have heard otherwise.  We also had the pleasure of being prayed for by a couple that knows our 'co-booth operators', Lisa and Matt Allyn.  Praise God for that, prayer means everything and we can do nothing without it.  We met a sweet lady that had just moved here from another state to attend VU for the summer and then to see her at church on Sunday was neat. We also have had a few people come up to our booth and ask if it was for 'pets'?  pet adoption?  Well, as needed as that is, no, this is for 'people' adoption.  Imagine that?!! A community or world that knows more or 'hears' more about 'pet adoption' than 'people adoption'?!! Where have we missed the mark?

{How could we as a people care more the dying pets in our world than the dying people?  I know that sounds harsh, but think about it! At the age of 16 in EE children age out of orphanages and have no where to go, unless they are one of the few in a community with a mission available called a 'transition house'.  There is a need right there. Who is willing to be Christ and go help the orphan that needs to learn how to survive for 'thrive' in their own country?  Without this help, unfortunately, the only offers coming along their paths are the predators on the street to take them into prostitution and crime.  Imagine a young person hungry and without shelter, that person would be very willing to go with whomever promises a better life. Even if that promise is a hoax.}

We have also had friends come out and say hi and buy some items! {thank you}  We have met new friends who love and support adoption as well. We had one guy come up and say he supports what we do, he has a son from Ethiopia and would get another, but its now just him and his son.  We didn't hear any more than that, but he left us wondering. Bless him Lord. We had a couple families come up and say hello, this is so and so..and its their daughter or son from another country or state.  So cool. We had one sweet 6 year old girl that was from EE and just adorable! Her mother gave us all kinds of tips about traveling, etc. She had to take 4 trips! Can you believe it?!! We loved how she talked so openly with her daughter right there. Mother to her daughter: How many years have you been here now? Daughter: Uh, 4? Mother: Well we got you in 20....  and its now 2013.  Daughter: Oh yes. Um....said her number. It was so cute!

So a big thank you to all our new friends who now know about our blog! And thank you to all our friends who have bought from us or visited us this month.

We will be done on SATURDAY, JUNE 29th!!

Paper in Flight!

PAPER:
Our dossier is headed out of France as we speak and on its way to our country! Once it hits the ground our translator will be hard at work and get it to the MOE next week (first week of June). Then we wait for a travel date.  Our facilitator and friend says it should take a week or two to obtain a travel date.  The travel date is expected to be near the end of June. We plan on arriving in country earlier than needed to get settled and visit some orphanages.  We are thrilled, excited and nervous about this endeavor, but know it is God's calling!

FAMILY:
We are also nervous about being away from our kids for a month over the summer, but know they are looking forward to spending time with their dad and his family! Our daughter will be packing for college and working while we are away and hopefully we will be back in time to take her to Grace College's Orientation Weekend in mid August.  Our oldest son will be looking for a job and learning to drive this summer. Our youngest son will be going to as many soccer camps as he possibly can to pursue his passion of soccer! They will also go on a trip with their grandparents to a state park and just enjoy some down time.

FUNDRAISING:
As you can see on our thermometer to the right of this page we are about $8,500 away from our goal. We have over 300 jarred items to sell yet from our tasting party fundraiser. If you would like the price sheet, message me! I will also put a link of it up on facebook again. All items are $8 or under. We will also be at the Central Park Plaza Market this summer with a booth to sell the rest of the items! A new friend of ours who is also adopting from another country will be selling t-shirts there too! Please come out and see us!
We may do a rummage sale yet before we leave if we have time. Please more than anything keep us in prayer as we set out on this journey of faith!

The Cost (and Some News on the Adoption)

Instead of worrying about what the adoption is going to cost, I've started thinking about what it would cost us if we DIDN'T adopt.  Yes, the money needed sometimes feels like an insurmountable obstacle.  Yes, we are anxious about how our family will blend with new children.  Yes, the setbacks have been frustrating and, at times, crushing.  However, we won't stop until we have reached the finish line.  There are children sitting in an orphanage that we know will be sitting in their bedroom in our home in the near future.  Quitting now would cost us that vision and it would mean we believed our God could not or will not provide.  The cost of not pressing on is far greater than the finances needed to complete the adoption.

Perhaps you have seen this video before.  If so, I anticipate that you will feel the urge to watch it again. If not, you must watch this brief film.  It puts into words and pictures how we feel about adoption and explains why we have pressed on over the last two years.

Like I said, it sums up the passion behind what we're doing.  We currently have about $10, 500 left to raise before we leave for Europe at some point this summer.  This includes an interest-free adoption loan of $5,000 (which we prefer not to take, but are thankful for this provision.)  To us, it is a big mountain to climb.  However, we serve a God who says through faith we can move mountains.  So, we are trusting that God in His might will throw this mountain out of the way of our progress.  We believe this because we know that God loves orphans more than we ever could and it is His will that these children be loved and cared for.

So, we submit our plans to God in faith and we trust in Him for provision.  What are our plans?  Well, we will continue to operate the etsy store and sell our remaining jarred items as well as prints, bibs and more.  You can visit the store and support us here.  We also plan to try to sell many of these items at farmer's markets and community sales.  Second, we are planning an event that will include garage sales in multiple locations on the same day.  The idea is that friends, family or adoption supporters will host a yard sale---big or small---to raise the remaining funds.  We are working on sales in Hobart and Valparaiso, but would love to see sales across the region, state, and even the country.  If a sale like this is something you might consider hosting, please let me know by commenting on this blog or emailing me at derekchirch@comcast.net.  Third, we will probably host a couple of nights at local fast food restaurants where a percentage of profits will go towards the adoptions.  Fourth, we will pray for donations and grants to help us.  Finally, we will continue to pour as much money into our adoption account as we can over the next couple of months.  Most of you know that we work in non-profit ministry, so we are by no means wealthy (by the American standard, at least).  But, I think it is important to share that we give a large percentage of our income towards this adoption each month.  It is not much, but we want to do everything we can do if we are asking for others to come alongside us.

At this point, it appears we should have all paperwork completed this week.  We will get everything notarized and sent to Indianapolis for the apostille process.  Meanwhile, our facilitator is already translating our home study and other paperwork we have emailed to her.  Once things come back in a week or so, we will send everything overseas.  It will likely be a month or less until we are given a travel date.  That date could be a couple of weeks away or a month or more away.  So, optimistically, we could be leaving in the third week of June.  Conservatively, we could leave in early July.  Either way, we finally see a light at the end of the tunnel.  There is a lot of money to raise and our paperwork needs to move smoothly, but we prayerfully trust the Lord that His timing is perfect here.  Thank you all for your prayers, encouragement and giving!  We've almost completed the journey!

Then the real journey of becoming a family starts. :)

Getting Ready! Our next move!!

Well, the Lord says to not get discouraged. He gives hope and he tells us to take courage.  It is time.
We have been through much, had ups and downs and learned a lot the past 2 years.  This started with the realization of orphan needs in the world way before, then took off with prayer and a picture of Kaylee and changed into a testing of our faith.  Were we going to keep going? Were we going to give up?  Yes and never!! Those were our answers and still are!  The direction took a little time and prayer to decide and we have decided to move toward Ukraine. We do not rule out other options as well, but we do so knowing that our family will continue to grow over the years through adoption possibly from various places!  We do not do this just for us...just because we want more children....no we do this out of knowing the orphan will change our lives out of our obedience to the Lord to adopt.  Do we also want children, well yes. Of course!

So hopefully Ukraine in June 2013.  We have some fundraisers we are working on, as well as saving as much $ as we can and being disciplined to stay on a budget!  Praise God in advance for His provision.

We will be having a Tasting Party in which people can taste items and they purchase them! For example, salsas, sauces, jams, cookie mixes, bread mixes, etc.  This will take about 2-3 months of prep work. If anyone has canning equipment and would like to donate 2 dozen items please let us know! There are also other ways to help, such as donating a bunch of ingredients that go on sale and we can put them together as well.  Canning jars of all sizes are needed as well!  Just let us know if you want/can help in any way and we would love to talk with you!  We are also looking for a cute location to hold the Tasting Party!  There could also be other items for sale there as well, like cupcakes, cake pops, smoothies, fresh juices, etc.  My specialty are fresh squeezed juices and smoothies, so I am considering having some of these ready made items to taste and purchase the ingredients at the party as well!  This party will be in either April or May.

There are other fundraisers as well such as the Master's Dance Academy, a rummage sale and the Kaylee's Hope Esty Store!

I am also trying my hand at making Vera bags, that would be just like Vera Bradley handbags and some children clothes that are just like Matilda Jane.  This will be fun! I will be putting quotes and pictures on my fb pages soon! :)

We know that God can provide and don't expect everyone to just fund us so to speak. We truly do enjoy preparing for these fundraising events and have experienced just how these events bring our friends and family together.  There are some friends and family that want to support us, but are just not so sure about adoption (the old questions of 'why would you want to do that?!) that arrive at the events and have a wow factor when they realize it really is working. Then we also have friends and family that care and really want to understand our perspective on the adoption mission and are motivated themselves to move toward adoption, praise God!.....and finally we have more friends and family that understand the mandate to Christians to care for the orphan and the needy and have already adopted...now being our cheerleaders and educators. When they all come together in one place it just makes the mission happen.  We pray many are inspired, changed and that the orphan truly changes the church.

Timeline of events and travel dates coming soon!! :) Please be in prayer for us, its a big step moving forward again.

Dance for a cause! Adoption!!

First of all we thank all of you for following our personal journey to adoption during this time. For those that have followed us since we began in 2011 you feel the pains of carrying the child and labor with us---in regards to the WAIT and PAPERWORK!!  It has been a long journey and that's ok. Ok in the sense that God is ultimately in charge and He has allowed this time for a reason. I know it has been really good for our family to blend over the past 2.5 years. Derek and I had recently been married and I have 3 children that were used to just a single mom raising them for 10 years.  Everyone of us have been adjusting to new roles and dynamics in this family. Actually it has readily prepared (as much as can be prepared for) us for adoption as we are used to the molding of family roles and the needs of children, etc. In fact, I have heard children of divorced parents are orphans themselves.  Unfortunately I see that in their lives.  Even though they have 2 parents (well 4 when you count remarriage!) that love them dearly and care for them so much, they still feel the consequences of abandonment.  It has been a journey as I have seen them learn to trust again and open up to their stepdad, respect his leadership and rely on him.  It is a joy to see, but also a heartache as I never wished that upon them.

We want to do all we can to show orphaned children in this world that there is a Savior that rescues them.  There is a Savior that never left them nor abandoned them. We want to be the hands and feet of Jesus to children in this world.

Another way we are going to do this is through a long time dance ministry!  About 11 or 12 years ago the Lord showed me that He is the author of dance.  I have a blog,Click Here which explains it all! Learn technical ballet, learn about God's purpose for dance and have fun praise dancing with all donations going towards supporting orphans!

Adoption and Kaylee

The definition of ADOPTION given by Dictionary.com is a verb (used with object) stated as 'to choose or take as one's own'. Looking back in my email I notice the date my husband and I started on this adoption journey together was 3/14/2011, which was exactly a year and a day after we got engaged and the day of my first son's birthday. However, the adoption - or to take as one's own-journey started way before. It started when God knocked on my heart when I saw videos of orphanages in a certain country. It especially started when I heard children were just moved to a 'dying' room when they were too ill. This was devastating news for a young American woman to hear! How could this be?!! How could anyone let this happen?!! As Americans, we are able to call CPS when we think a child is being abused and our state will investigate and rescue children when needed.

We don't have orphanages per se here in America, but we tend to do our best to protect children.  My heart cried out for those children. My heart broke for children abandoned and hurt, left to die. My heart broke for orphans, those abandoned children with no one left to protect them.

Are you willing to allow your heart to be broken for a child? Are you willing to let your comforts go so you can do what Jesus would do?! Save a child from death?! What is worth more?

Can God provide the funds?  Clearly, yes He can.  Do you think God is BIG enough?  More importantly, the question is, Do you BELIEVE God is big enough?!  Faith, sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see (Hebrews 11:1).  Seek to be like Abraham...faith, God counted to him as righteousness.

I am basically talking to Jesus followers at this point....God is waiting for you to seek Him in everyway. He is even waiting for you to ask Him about His heart for orphans.  It is clearly stated in scripture, but are you willing to ask God to GIVE YOU His heart for orphans?!!

Click here, here and and here to gather information and stories about orphans.Click here, here and here for more information and resources.  Pray and go.  Choose to obey and be doing 'true religion' as scripture states.  Also, yes, taking care of widows is a part of that and there are many ways to support them as well.  Many of the orphanages around the world have helped support widows by giving them jobs to take care of orphans. Other organizations, like 31 Bits, are providing jobs so women can rise above poverty.  Support them! Click here to see another organization committed to helping women and families rise and raise their families.

We started our journey of adoption by seeing a profile and picture of a little girl named 'Kaylee' according to her agency representing her back in 2011. However, by the time our paperwork got to her country she was 'already in process of being adopted'.  So, we moved on. We waited for another match and did not receive a match according to our paperwork.  Then, as many know, our country closed its doors recently to American adoptions.

As we are praying and seeking the Lord for the next step, we are greatly anticipating making major strides this year and pray by years' end we will have an orphan(s)-no-more in our family.  We are planning on keeping our blog name- Kaylee's Hope (kayleeshope.blogspot.com) as well as our Esty Store named Kaylee's Hope and allowing the name 'Kaylee' to represent all the orphans in the world.   The most recent estimate is that there are approximately 145 million orphans in the world (UNICEF 2008).  Will you be a voice for a Kaylee? Will you ransom a Kaylee? Will you help save the life of a Kaylee?  She is waiting for you. Will you take her as 'your own'??

I was adopted.

I was adopted. This past week I resigned from a my job that I held for the past 4 years. 2 years ago ended a 10 year stretch of single motherhood. During those single motherhood years the Lord tested and tried me in many ways. He was relentless in His pursuit of me and faithful in answering the prayers of 'I will do anything Lord, I surrender to You Lord, make me more like You Lord, shape me Lord, etc.' He became my everything during those hard and trying years. At moments of trial for provision or for company He would ask if I would surrender to Him being my all. Sometimes I failed the tests and all the time He loved me. During those 10 years I held a job that just didn't seem to make ends meet. Finances were always a struggle for me, some bad choices led to financial hardship, plus add a single income for raising 3 kids..it was tough. At one point, I joined with Crown Financial Ministries and utilized their Volunteer 'Money Coaches' that was extremely helpful, but the income just was so low compared to the expenses that it felt like barely a 'baby army crawl' to get anywhere. It felt like there was no end in sight and now freedom on the horizon. I remember at my coach getting down to the nitty gritty with me several times and saying, 'it would be better to go to Sam's Club and get the bulk box of chicken tenders than try to buy in small quantities each week' or 'find out which monthly bill you can cut back, such as your phone bill..call them and see'. It was tedious and felt like finding $2 more dollars wasn't really worth it. There often was much fretting or anxiousness surrounding paying bills and purchasing anything! A couple times during those years I was working 2 or 3 jobs to make ends meet, but then very worn out with no energy left to parent.

In all this God was still relentless. I had asked God several times over the past 6 years stating 'why am I doing this'(working in other positions for employment). There were many times of trials and ups and downs with my job. One negative was not having my summer's off(as I had as a teacher)!! Boo. Also, not feeling like I saw my kids enough or feeling super stressed making it difficult to relax and have fun with them, etc. He never seemed to quite answer me, other than several times I heard, 'I have released you from this'. Ah, what I now realize! It was not the job He was releasing me from at that time, it was the stress. I did not NEED to stress. I did not NEED to fret. See, I did not really believe He had rescued me. I did not believe in my spirit that He had adopted me as His own. It was not till this past Friday, as I resigned from a 4 year position and began dialoging with my Savior about 'where He has brought me and to where I am going' that He began to unfold something to me. You see, I have signed a teaching contract to work with my past employer again or some would say, 'I am going back home.' I will be teaching at Victory Christian Academy again I asked 'why Lord'. 'Why the 6 year journey of working for other employers and now to go back?!! I was just confused. I was/am really looking forward to going back as I have always loved teaching, but I was just plain confused and trying to make sense of it. The Lord spoke very clearly to me...because you now believe you are mine. You now trust me as Father and Provider. Its as if He audibly said, 'See, Alyssa, you are mine and you are adopted. If you would care for your own children, how much more will I care for you, oh daughter of mine.' He very clearly reminded me that adopted children are cared for and loved.

As I have been reading in preparation for our daughter to come from EE, I read that our child may fret and worry at times about food or abandonment or clothing, etc., but that doesn't change the fact that she is cared for and the provision is right there waiting for her, not going anywhere and sometimes healing needs to take place in order for the child to trust the parent and relax. I guess I needed some healing time. It has been a journey of healing. I am reminded that I am adopted. I am a child of God. Truly. God's children don't fret. God's children don't worry. He is the King of Kings and the Lord of lords. He is Father.

Stepping Forward

This waiting is not easy or for the faint in heart.
As it is written, "He who waits on the Lord shall renew their strength." Thank you Lord.
SOOOOO...........its time for a step.
God is renewing our strength. I am thankful and excited to share that Journey Moms is going strong and been a blessing to many over the past year.  Some of you remember Journey Moms started last year, when two thoughtful women came to our adoption fundraiser, shared their contact info and said to keep in touch with them!  I jumped at the chance to talk with them due to my own questions and desire for support in this endeavor and we all started a 'Mom Support Group' for those touched by adoption!  Thanks to Jayne and Diane for opening their houses to us every month, praying for us and sharing their stories and hearts with us!

Our Journey Moms is taking a next step and joining with Liberty Bible Church's Adoption Ministry- Growing Families to host an ADOPTION SEMINAR!!  We pray this will bless many families, caregivers, grandparents, friends, aunts and uncles, etc. touched by adoption and give them needed resources and ideas for supporting the adopted child. You are welcome to attend!

YOU ARE INVITED!!

As Derek and I began this adoption journey with Kaylee in mind, knowing many adoption stories from families in our own lives and books I had read and along with the family dynamics we have already, there were no doubt some fears and questions that came up!  In this, the Lord readily brought 3 needed women in my life.  2 of whom started the adoption ministry-Journey Moms with me and 1 that I wept with at our adoption rummage sale.  I spoke of Jayne and Diane already and I am so thankful for their support and prayers over the past year and especially during the time of learning that Kaylee had already been adopted by another family when our paperwork arrived in her country. Debi (speaker for seminar above!) also walked into our rummage sale that day for a God-moment when I expressed by concerns with attachment regarding adopting an older child (Kaylee was 5 yrs.). I began crying just sharing how hold she is and how I am just unsure of how it will go ....Debi assured me and said that she had just gone through attachment therapy training and would love to come over and work with her!  I started weeping.  This was a moment when God showed me His ever-present faithfulness. He knew my heart and my fears that very day, He knew His request to take care of orphans, and He knew our hearts to be obedient to the call.    He took care of it.  Even now, we make our plans and God directs our steps.  That day was bigger than Kaylee. That day was a day of obedience and desire to support orphans however and whenever we can!  In that, I am so glad Debi has agreed to share some of her attachment training with anyone willing to learn!  This is especially helpful to those related to or friends with those that are or have adopted!  Please plan on joining us for that special night!  I am looking forward to it and know it will be helpful when someday we have a child in our arms and not just a football!! See below.  :) xoxoxox   Alyssa (& Derek)

News Next Week?

Thank you to the many people who continue to check in on us through this blog, even though we have had so little news to report.  It means a lot to us to know that others are joining us in our anticipation for this adoption to move forward.

We continue to be in almost daily contact with our adoption agency.  They in turn are in regular communication with their staff on the ground in Eastern Europe.  To this point, we have gotten news in bits and pieces, most of it relatively disappointing.  The ministry of education has talked with our agency about a few children for us, but none that would be available to us according to our home study (age, health, etc are fairly non-negotiable items, both for the government and for us).  Most of the time, the meetings have been completely fruitless.

That said, we have some hope that we may get a referral we could accept next week!  Judy (our agency manager) let us know that another meeting is scheduled for Monday and that there may be a child available for us.  We have learned not to get our hopes up, but we are cautiously optimistic that news could be coming soon.  We ask that you guys pray for this weekend and early next week that we would finally get news that moves us forward.  There is a little girl out there somewhere who is supposed to be a part of our family...let's pray that God gets her here sooner than later!

Have a happy, blessed Easter....He is risen!!

The Waiting Room

As much as I know things are going to move fast and quickly all will be different, I still am getting a little anxious knowing that the time is getting closer.  I love being a Mama and cherish hearing my 17 year old call me by that name still, however, those that say mothering is a never ending job are sort of mistaken. I would say that my role as Mama has severely changed over the years.  They really DO grow up quick and just don't need you like they used to, which (hesitantly) is ok. A Mama's job is different over the years and we just wouldn't be Mama's if we were not helping them grow up and move on, now would we?  Growing up means that they just DON'T need you like they used to....ah the irony.

As the time gets closer to getting our referral I am greatly anticipating all the mothering that I will once again be doing. The nose wiping, the potty-'reminding' or 'training'-not sure yet, the chuckles of laughter, the silly faces, the coloring together, reading together, the daily clothes choices, the hair bows, the hair brushing, the bathing, the bubbles in the bath!, the dancing around the house to loud music!, the meal preparation for a little one, the dr. visits, the new school visits and attending at some point (look out Mrs. Linden or Mrs. Branner!), the learning how to ride her bike, the visits to the beach, the 'pet the dog nicely, like this', the 'why is she crying' questions, the 'is she sleeping yet?', the Winnie the Pooh movies and Sesame Street shows! Oh the joys to come!

This is the Waiting Room. It is a busy room.  It is a time of thinking, planning and anticipating.  Waiting is a verb. It is a busy word. It means to.... to stay in place in expectation of; a : to be ready and available and  b : to remain temporarily neglected or unrealized.  Ok, I like the first two better than the last.  So here I am, here we are...ready and expecting.  :)  We are planning on getting more ready around the home after the first trip.  Then we will know what size she is and will be able to go through her clothes and sort out the right sizes.  Right now we have about every size from 2 to 8.  We don't have a coat yet, but think it will be warm when we get her, at least at this rate that may be true.  We are hoping to travel during the warm months coming up. That is much more pleasant for me as I am a warm weather girl!  I was so not looking forward to EE in the winter months!  So that is one positive note.

One more thing Derek and I were talking about recently is the name of this blog. Kaylee's Hope.  We love the name and even though Kaylee has been adopted by another family we feel we should keep this name.  At this time it is best. That could change in the future, but we are planning on continuing to advocate for ORPHANS ongoing, so this would be an appropriate title as we have a HEART for the FATHERLESS and Kaylee was once one such child.  She is also the one, though she does not know it, that started us down this path towards EE and to hands-on work with the orphan.  There are so many 'Kaylee's' in the world, let's all choose to be a part of helping save Kaylee's life by either adopting or supporting those that do.  The root being--do you value life? Check out these orphans that already have alot raised for their adoptions, Click Here .

You can do something too! :)  Love you all and can't wait to update you on our progress soon!

Adoption/Family Updates!

Thank you to all of you who continue to visit our blog even though we have been slooooooooow to post any updates lately.   So, thought I would write a quick blog on what's going on with the adoption and with our family...hopefully, if all goes well, there will be bigger news coming soon!

Today, Alyssa and I visited the notary to get some final papers notarized for our new region.  Following the advice of our agency, we have decided to change regions for our adoption.  After we lost Kaylee, we didn't have a strong reason to stay in the region we were in.  Global recommended a change of regions as this area is supposedly known for much smoother adoptions.  We have an online friend who adopted from this region and had nothing but glowing things to say about her experience there...so, we are trusting God that this is a good decision and that He will bring us the child that is meant for our family.  We will send the papers to the secretary of state tomorrow for apostilling, and then they will be on to Maryland.  From that point, they will be sent out of the country.  We won't put a timetable on things from that point, but we are hopeful that things will move efficiently.

Alyssa is busy with work (as usual!) and continues to be blessed by working full time with people with special needs.  (She works to get funding, housing and services for people with disabilities.)  I was able to meet a couple of her clients on Sunday at church....what a blessing!  These two women had such a sweet innocence and undeniable love for Alyssa.  That was very cool for me to see.  Alyssa has also had the privilege of organizing and being a part of a local adoptive mom's group that meets a couple of times a month or so...the group continues to grow every time they meet and she is finally not the only mom there who hasn't adopted yet!  This has been a great resource for her and our family as she gets to learn so much from a lot of sweet families who have gone through this process before us.

(A beautiful painting Alyssa did for a friend!)

Sam was voted homecoming queen at VCA this past week!  Victory does things a little differently...the teachers nominate the court based on Christian character, school and community involvement and academics.  So, it was definitely a privilege and honor for Sam to be thought of so highly by her teachers.  The students then vote from the nominees and Sam won!  I would say I am surprised, but frankly I am not...she is a wonderful young lady who has the respect of adults and is loved by her peers. She is in the middle of thinking through her options for college (she is a junior now) and is strongly considering Indiana Wesleyan, Grace and Huntington.  We are planning to take her on a few visits next month, so hopefully God will give her some clear direction through that trip.

(Queen Sam!)

Cade went to his first dance this Saturday (VCA's homecoming) and had a great time!  He is also starting to get involved in the youth group at Liberty and will be going on their winter retreat in February.  He also starts high school baseball practice in February.  I'm excited to see him getting to do so many social things and I think this is going to be a great spring for him.

(Cade ready for the dance!)

Logan just got his second grading period report card and once again got straight A's!  We are so proud of him!  He is really growing up and we are seeing him mature all the time.  He has a good group of buddies this year and is really enjoying his fifth grade class.  Hopefully, he will be able to play spring soccer this year.  He is also getting involved with Liberty's 5th/6th grade ministry and that has been great...he has close VCA friends in the group and that has really helped him engage with church.

(Logan's "crazy" picture)

I hope everyone doesn't mind me bragging on my family....they are all great and special in their own unique ways.  I am still getting to know them every day, and I am more and more proud of them all the time!

In terms of me, it has been a great month.  The basketball team hit a rough patch for a while with players out of the lineup for various reasons, but we have won our last four games and are really growing as a team.  The conference tournament and state tournament are this month and we think we have a good shot in both tourneys.  It's been a fun season.  Last week, I had the great privilege to speak alongside Rick Jones at VCA's spiritual emphasis week.  After prayer and consideration, we chose to specifically address the boys of Victory.  We have a strong conviction that if God wins the hearts of young men, he can do amazing things in our school.  We worked together on a sermon series entitled "Modern Warfare" that elaborated on the spiritual battle that young men must fight.  At the end of the week, we offered an opportunity for commissioning as a warrior for God...a true man of God.  Over 50 boys between 4th-12th grades responded to the challenge!  What a blessing that was only a result of the outpouring of God's spirit on our school.  I hope to post video of these sermons on my blog (derekchirch.blogspot.com) sometime in the coming weeks.  Great week at a great school!

(A shot from our big win @ Portage Christian, our rivals!)

We have plans in the works for more fundraising and we hope to post more on this soon.  May the Lord bless and keep you all and make His face shine upon you!

not easy.

This walk with the Lord is anything but, easy. It is fruitful, it is a journey, it is encouraging, it is joyful...but not easy. At times it may seem so, but then we need to ask...does that mean I am growing?  Or am i just going through routine? business as usual, so to speak.  However,  a twist on this thought is that when we are relying on ourselves to accomplish anything it may not be easy...relying on the Holy Spirit is easy.  Doesn't He say- My yoke is easy, my burden is light?  Well yes, it is, when we are surrendering to ourselves. Surrendering to our own dreams, our own goals, our own wants.  Now the surrendering --that's not the easy part.  Is death easy? Is dying painless?  Dying to our own desires, our own will, our own dreams.

We need to be careful what we attach to.  "Detachment is the great secret of interior peace.  Along the way, in the journey with Christ, we get attached to (literally 'nailed to') behaviors, habits, things and people in an unhealthy way", as stated in Emotionally Healthy Spirituality by Peter Scazzero.  He goes on to say that we rarely know how attached we are to something until it is removed.  Then the power struggle begins.

Szazzero goes on to say, 'we are to appreciate nature, people and all God's gifts, along with His presence  in Creation-----without being ensnared by them. It has rightly been said that those who are the most detached on the journey are best able to taste the purest joy in the beauty of created things.  The critical issue on this journey with God is not "Am I happy?", but "Am I free?"  We are to live our lives as the rest of the world--marrying, experiencing sorrow and joy, buying things and using them--but always with awareness that these things in themselves are not our lives.   We are marked for eternity, free from the dominating power of things.   Among our losses, God answers-- No, you don't need that. You need me!'

'The journey with Jesus calls us to a life of undivided devotion to Him.  This requires that we simplify our lives, removing distractions.  Part of that will mean grieving our losses and embracing the gift of our limits.'

While reading this book over Christmas break and intentionally journaling, seeking God for a personal revival, more depth in Him and a greater capacity to love Him and others, we have heard the news that our little Kaylee has been adopted by a Russian family.   All along, I have known that circumstances could change at anytime and 'not to get too attached until its final', however I still have had a level of attachment to Kaylee.  This is normal and completely healthy as we had a picture and information about her!  So this is grieved by Derek and I, our children, our families and by you all that have supported us along this journey.  We have no control over this happening.   The joy in this is that she has a home!  She has a home and we are thankful that it could be a Christian home. Praise God and we pray for this!

We do not ask for pity or anyone to feel sorry for us, we ask for you to REJOICE with us! We ask that you rejoice with us that she has a home! :)   Yet we will Praise God!  Rejoice in our trials (James 1) He says, so that is what we will and MUST do!  He commands us to do this, so please do this with us! We have to remember God is much bigger than us!

Please don't think we are not grieving. We have grieved over the past several weeks of knowing this possibility. There have been times of anger and frustration over the system, having her picture and profile, etc....but we now rejoice. We rejoice she has a home, we rejoice in our trial, we rejoice in our faith being tested, we rejoice in our friends and family supporting us and being on this journey with us.  We now trust the Lord once again for His great provision for this little girl and for the next one!  We are so grateful that there is another one that can have a family.  Come on church---rise up and BE.  Be what God had commanded us to be. As my husband said earlier just today, as we were leaving church and I said once again, it is sad....he said, 'yes, but it is about an orphan having a home, not about our feelings'.

We look forward to this next step in our lives and in the lives of all the orphans in need.  We continue to be reminded that God has called us to be a voice for the voiceless and this is not just about one little girl. We continue to ask the Lord for ways to be their voice.

We desire to grow our family and have more children as well, don't get us wrong, He has definitely given us that desire! However, we will wait on the Lord knowing that He has a perfect timing and a perfect will.  We will continue to seek to offer our lives to Him in obedience asking Him to grow us and change us in Him.  Come Lord Jesus! :)

He Sets the Lonely in Families...

The adoption process has been full of twists and turns, so we have gotten used to expecting the unexpected.  Honestly, though, we never expected the news that Kaylee is being adopted by a Russian family.

When you commit to a child from another country, very rarely is that a binding commitment in the eyes of that government.  You can begin the process and attempt to pursue the child, but until you actually have the approval of the judge you have no legal claim to her.  If a citizen of that country steps up and pursues an adoption of the child, there is literally nothing an American family can do.  We have known all along that this was a possibility but that these situations rarely arise.  Unfortunately for us, this is precisely the case for Kaylee.

In talking with a missionary friend from the country, it is rare that families there adopt children (let alone children with any kind of medical or special need).  He said that it is almost always a Christian family that pursues these adoptions.  So, while we have no official knowledge of her family, we have good reason to believe she is going to be in a Christian family.  We rejoice in that hope and will pray that the Lord directs her path and she comes to know Him in a personal way.  It brings us joy that she is no longer counted among the "lonely."

Are we disappointed?  Of course.  Despite not ever meeting Kaylee, our family "knew" her from pictures and descriptions.  We "knew" her in the sense that we pictured her in our family, in her room and at our school.  Poor little Laney (our three-year old niece) just knew that she and Kaylee would be best friends.  When her mom broke the news to her tonight and let her know that there are many other lonely, orphaned kids who need a family, she cried and said "But I don't love the other kids!!!"  (It's okay to laugh at that...it's cute.)  Our own kids were very surprised and I think are not sure what to think...they had really adjusted to the idea of a new sibling and were expecting to meet Kaylee soon.  So, certainly our disappointments are real.  Whether we "met" Kaylee or not, it is difficult not to imagine her in our family.

That said, God is a comforter and peace-giver and He has shown Himself to be present in adjusting our perspective.  We feel just as much joy as we do sadness.  Two orphans will now have a home!  This is certainly greater than just one little girl coming to be with us.  When we decided to adopt, our decision wasn't based on Kaylee.  We want to adopt because kids need families.  God cares for the orphans, the lonely and the brokenhearted.  We want to have that same heart.  So, while our plans have shifted in terms of specifics, nothing has changed in our general plans.  We are still headed to Eastern Europe as soon as we have a referral.  There are some minor paperwork adjustments and perhaps a little more waiting (no surprise there), but nothing will stop us from fulfilling God's call to care for orphans.  While we do not have a specific child in mind, we do know that we will be referred a little girl.  Once we get that referral, we will probably not provide very much information to friends and family until the adoption is official.  We learned our lesson about attachments throughout these months, and we want to protect our friends and family from any unneeded hurt.

Will you pray for us as we walk with God through the next steps of this journey?  As I'm sure many will ask, here is a tentative timeline (note that I did say tentative---everything is tentative when dealing with adoptions!):

January- Remaining updated paperwork will be sent to EE for dossier submittal in another region.  Assuming there are no errors in the paperwork, this could be a relatively short process.

January/February- We hope to have a referral during this time period.  Basically, once everything is submitted, we will be matched with a child that meets our requests.  We will then have time to pray over the referral, review it and decide whether or not to accept it.  It is unlikely we would not accept the referral unless there were unforeseen issues that arose or some factor we felt would not fit with our family.

February- Once we have a referral, we will do another large fundraiser of some kind.  We still have money to raise, but we wanted to put a long block of time between our fundraisers.  We do not want to burn anyone out or offend anyone.  We know people support and love us (as well as orphans), so we do not feel bad to fundraise.  But it's nice for everyone to have a break.  This fundraiser will likely be an event (a bowling night maybe?)

February/March- Maybe we will finally get to travel?!?

March/April/May- If we have taken a first trip, we should be able to travel during these months.

We covet your prayers.  Pray that our family will be able to maintain a joyful spirit despite the circumstances.  Pray that our paperwork will be accepted without any mistakes.  Pray that we will be issued a quick referral.  Pray that we will have wisdom as we make a decision about accepting the referral.  Pray that we will be able to travel soon and that this little child will find a family in us.

Thanks for hanging in there with us...we will try to update the blog a little more frequently now that we have been able to put this news out there!

Family.

Family. As we are on this journey together, we are finding there are many aspects to our family and others that are the same and many that are different. Regardless, we are family.  The amazing aspect of family is that it can always change, however, it is secure.  Family gives us a sense of security as we are there to support each other and be each others fan.  Below are some definitions of family:
  • A basic social unit consisting of parents and their children, considered as a group, whether dwelling together or not.
  • Two or more people who share goals and values, have long-term commitments to one another, and reside usually in the same dwelling place
It is interesting, isn't it?  I never imagined my family would consist of having the children every other week. This makes time with them much more valuable when they are home, however, they have an amazing opportunity to be challenged in the area of values and life choices. They have a life of eye opening interactions that push them to make decisions for themselves about how they will live the life God has given them. As my two older ones are now 16 and 14 years of age, I am realizing motherhood drastically changes at this point.  No longer do they need the same type of nurturing and instruction that they once needed as young ones...now they need to be heard, loved and challenged.  I am encouraged by my husband's words and guidance towards our children.  As a step dad of a little over year and many years of working with teens, God brought us all together at just the right time. Would I have loved my dear husband to come into my life sooner! Oh yes. Wouldn't that have been nice?!  However, God knew and God knows.  He has brought just the right direction into our children's lives over the past couple years. I marvel at God's foreknowledge and provision in this.  Just when I really had no idea how to handle the 'up to the wee hours' bedtimes, the 'push away from mom syndrome' and the 'smart look/talk'...along comes my husband with a gentle word and guiding hand.  From a guy that likes to take the lead, he has been very patient over the past year-- when 'experts' have said, 'let the biological parent do the parenting' and 'talk behind closed doors', etc....yes we have had some moments, but those are the sharpening ones. Looking back, I thank the Lord for those moments.

We are not in this to have it easy just as the blog says....www.goodtobecrazy.com --Click Here.
We are not here to shelter them from all that life blows at them. We are not here to guard them and protect them from every hardship and trial, we are here to guide them through it. How do we grow and especially grow closer to God? It is usually through a trial we are going through or some reason to 'really pray', right?  Let's get in the trenches with our children. The Lord calls us to help the broken and hurting...if at the expense of some of our own comfort and children's comfort--then yes! That is what we are to do.  King David said, "I will not offer a sacrifice to you God that does not cost me anything". This is what we are called to do as Christians. When we lay down our life, we find our life.  When we do what is right on behalf of the needy, we are doing it unto the Lord and the fruit will abound.  Will our children complain or act 'put out'?  uh, at times, possibly.  But hang in there. Will they learn to give and care and love? quite possibly yes.  They will learn to 'obey God's command' to love others and go into all the world, when you do.  They will learn to follow you when you lay down your life.  They will learn to care when you do.  Go.  Do. Listen to that call.  No matter.  Ruffled feathers at times? possibly yes.  But the thing I know about feathers is that they will lay back down after a little while. :)

As we wait to hear about Kaylee's availability over the next couple weeks, I am even more encouraged and motivated to be a voice for the orphan.  I am also reminded that we are all orphans. Even my children, we are all orphans in need of a loving Father--our Heavenly Father.  We are lost on our own. We were bought at a price. The price of Jesus on the cross.  As we walk by His Spirit today and wait on His leading let us remember that He is Sovereign. Let's trust Him more today than we did yesterday.  Let's fear less.  Let's ask Him what He has called us to do. Logic aside.  He is bigger and more logical than us.  Let's do it.
